The Rockford Diocese purchased property on the northeast and southeast corners of Jewett and Standish streets for construction of the St. Laurence church and parish. The boundaries for the parish were: the Fox River to the East, Plato Center to the West, halfway to Dundee on the North, and halfway to St. Charles on the south.

The first Mass of the church was celebrated in the club rooms of Saint Joseph’s on October 21, 1928 by Father Laurence Prendergast. Construction of the new church continued and the first Mass was celebrated at our current location on September 8, 1929 - in the auditorium. It wasn’t until November 24, 1929 that Saint Laurence Church officially opened with Forty Hours Devotion. The dedication occurred May 18, 1930.

The church interior underwent a renovation beginning in 1971, under the guidance of Father Philip O’Neil. The church was closed for about 5 weeks with Mass being celebrated in the auditorium. Re-dedication took place on November 28, 1971.

In 2003, the parish undertook a major renovation of the building to add a narthex, an elevator, and a sacristy. This renovation also enlarged the balcony and returned the church to a more traditional look. 

During previous renovations, the original pipe organ was removed because it was in disrepair. In 2021, a used, 14-rank pipe organ was offered to St. Laurence from a church closing elsewhere in Illinois. Taking advantage of the enlarged balcony, the pipe organ project was completed in the spring of 2022 under the supervision of Fr. Andrew Mulcahey.

St. Laurence Church strives to provide reverent, beautiful liturgies by continuing to offer, renew, and maintain our sacred art, architecture, and music as we look forward to our 100th anniversary in 2028. 

La diócesis de Rockford compró la propiedad en las esquinas noreste y sureste de las calles Jewettbefore addition y Standish para construir la iglesia y la parroquia de San Lorenzo. En 2003, la parroquia llevó a cabo una importante renovación del edificio para añadir un nártex, un ascensor y una sacristía. La renovación también amplió el balcón y devolvió a la iglesia un aspecto más tradicional. Así es como se encuentra la iglesia en la actualidad.
